“TILT” Skateboard Wheel
Born in 1973 in Toulouse, where he still lives and works, TILT is an internationally renowned graffiti artist. His passion for skateboarding naturally led him to discover a whole new world at a very young age. In this world, he discovered the aesthetics and philosophy of graffiti, the transgressions it entails, and a place where the notion of public space is constantly called into question, as it has become a playground. Not to mention that he was also confronted with the central question of individual freedom within a particular territory or area.Throughout his subsequent career, Tilt has developed an abstract language deeply connected to the full scope of the performative gesture, the primitive and raw nature of the outline, and the way it is written on a particular surface in a particular place in the world. . His anti-aesthetic approach is one of destruction, disintegration, and elimination. He breaks up all arrangements, plays with scale, while decontextualizing raw graffiti or random objects from the street to exhibit them in entirely new spaces. And yet, beyond this apparent directness, his work creates a sense of anticipation in the viewer, as it takes time to reveal itself; to be read in its entirety. Letters have become fragments and echoes that take shape through the plasticity of language. Allusions and references to graffiti’s classic heritage are concealed and juxtaposed, becoming a combination of many different styles of street writing. The murals by Tilt, like the rest of his work, are the product of an ongoing dialogue between urban space and a reflection of all the codes of this nocturnal underground culture and the different groups that make it up. It is about what brings them together and what makes them stronger. He has transformed his marks on city walls into rituals that he will spread around the world.
