Portrait: Dave Baranes and his striking-eyed animals
This week, discover Dave Baranes, an animal painter passionate about graffiti and street art. This self-taught artist grew up in the suburbs of Paris, where he developed a passion for urban art.
Today, Dave Baranes’ works are exhibited in galleries around the world, from Cap Ferret and Paris to Switzerland and Canada.
From an early age, Dave Baranes’ passion for “the wall” led him to create trompe-l’œil murals. His years spent painting decorative works helped him develop technical expertise, precision, and a thorough command of painting techniques. They also opened him up to more traditional art.
In 2015, he launched his collection of big cat works. His animals, with their striking gazes, sometimes rendered in vivid colors and sometimes in black and white, make for a deeply moving collection. The expressions in their eyes prompt us to reflect on our own humanity, all the more so because these animals are endangered. Ultra-realistic, Dave Baranes’ animals, set against urban backdrops, illustrate the chaos of the world and invite us to consider humanity’s impact on the environment and its consequences.
Dave Baranes draws on a wide range of influences, which are evident throughout his work. He skillfully combines spray paint and acrylic to create his graffiti, while using trompe-l’œil techniques in the backgrounds of his canvases.
