JONONE

JonOne, whose real name is John Andrew Perello, is a Dominican-born graffiti artist and painter, born in New York in 1963. Known for his innovative approach to street art, he began tagging the streets of Harlem at the age of 17. His unique style challenges the traditional “rules” of graffiti by fully embracing the concept of “freestyle,” a philosophy that allows him to create without limits.

A major retrospective titled “Carte Blanche” is currently on view at Fluctuart in Paris, from September 11 to December 21, 2025. The exhibition traces 40 years of JonOne’s artistic output, from his early experiments to his recent works. His work can also be seen in the temporary exhibition “Panorama” at the Chapelle de l’Observance in Draguignan, open until September 27, 2025. Looking ahead, Speerstra Gallery in Paris is planning a JonOne exhibition titled “Freedom,” from October 11 to November 8, 2025.

Having grown up in Harlem, JonOne was profoundly influenced by hip-hop culture, urban life, and the world of the New York subway. His art blends these experiences with a contemporary approach, creating a vibrant, energetic visual signature.

A self-taught artist, he left New York to settle in Paris in 1987. It was in the French capital that he made the transition from graffiti to painting on canvas, a medium that would bring him international recognition. There, he met influential artists such as Speedy Graphito and LAII, and quickly established himself on the Paris art scene.

JonOne’s works are characterized by a complete use of space, with no white areas. His rich, deep palette plays with contrasts and layers of color. His work combines symmetry and asymmetry, repetition and spontaneity, while maintaining perfect control of his hand. Each painting is an abstract improvisation, conveyed with vibrant intensity and a palpable joie de vivre.

Beyond the gallery world, JonOne has collaborated with prestigious brands such as Lacoste, Hennessy, Air France, Perrier, and many others, establishing his influence in the worlds of luxury and fashion.

In 2023, he presented his solo exhibition The World of Tomorrow at the Musée du Touquet, further confirming his status as a leading figure on the contemporary art scene.
